On June 15 2020, after receiving a grant for SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19 testing, CSVS began testing the public on demand, by request, or by CDC criteria, based on the terms of the grantor, HRSA. Our goal is to fulfill the grant while making the test easily available to our farm-worker community.

We use oropharyngeal swab specimen collection method, performed at any of our clinic locations in specially designated medical tents, by staff protected by appropriate PPE as recommended by the CDC.

The type of SARS-CoV-2 test done at CSVS is based on The Aptima® SARS-CoV-2 assay, “a nucleic acid amplification in vitro diagnostic test (NAAT) intended for the qualitative detection of RNA from SARS-CoV-2 isolated and purified from upper respiratory specimens.” (https://www.hologic.com/sites/default/files/2020-10/AW-21492-001_005_01.pdf).

CSVS notifies patients of their results with a phone call in 48 to 72 hours for tests done on weekdays, barring any other circumstances that may cause a delay. CSVS physicians manage both positively and negatively testing patients; non-CSVS persons are given their results along with proper counseling and interpretation based on CDC guidelines; they are then directed to their own PCPs unless they opt to be managed at CSVS for this specific problem. We do not perform contact-tracing.

CSVS provides COVID-19 testing services on a contractual basis for some companies in the County. Our Outreach department has partnered with a consortium to provide testing for the Homeless in Salinas. CSVS is collaborating with UC Berkeley researchers on the topic of COVID-19.
